Swooping Gannets

March 22, 2009 #

When there’s no decent surf at local beach Muriwai, I like to go check out the colony of Australasian Gannets. Below, a shady-looking fellow makes a pass over the neighborhood.

These guys actually surf as well—sort of: When there’s an offshore wind, you’ll often see a flight of gannets swoop down and pick up the lift in front of waves. They get within a foot or two of the wave faces, and carry some serious speed. It looks like a lot of fun!

Popular Parasol

March 15, 2009 #

Tahiti Tourisme are running a marketing campaign on the back of buses in Auckland. The photo they picked sports a parasol on a white beach, with some overwater bungalows in the background. On closer inspection, the scene seemed a little bit familiar. So I went back through my French Polynesia gallery, and found the photo below, taken not two meters from where the promotional shot was snapped. Apparently, tiny Motu Toopua is the place to be.
