Swooping Gannets

When there’s no decent surf at local beach Muriwai, I like to go check out the colony of Australasian Gannets. Below, a shady-looking fellow makes a pass over the neighborhood.

These guys actually surf as well—sort of: When there’s an offshore wind, you’ll often see a flight of gannets swoop down and pick up the lift in front of waves. They get within a foot or two of the wave faces, and carry some serious speed. It looks like a lot of fun!
